Whip anim

The full whip animation.

Whip Link S2The whip is a weapon used by all Spelunkers in Spelunky 2, as it is their default starting weapon, spawning with it in every game.

Properties

It is used by pressing the Action button when the hands are empty, and is the only weapon that cannot be dropped and does not take up the held item slot.

When attacking with the whip, the Spelunker coils the whip behind them before swinging it forward, causing a short animation delay before enemies in front of the Spelunker take damage. Players should learn to compensate for this by timing their attacks carefully, beginning the swing slightly before enemies come into its range.

In addition to dealing damage to enemies, the whip can push and deflect physical objects, such as corpses, rocks, items, treasure (useful for no gold runs and Ghosting), as well as certain projectiles (arrows, boomerangs, flies). The whip can also break open containers, such as pots, crates, and standard chests.

Unlike other weapons, it is unable to do damage to stunned enemies, only being able to knock them around. It also cannot do damage to particular enemies, such as Yetis, NPCs like Shopkeepers, and bulky enemies like Pangxie or Robots. Having a Powerpack equipped imbues the whip with fire, dealing 1 damage in addition to the normal whip damage. This allows players to burn objects like Webs and Bush Blocks, as well as harm whip-immune and stunned enemies.

The player cannot turn around, hang onto ledges, or cling to walls using Climbing Gloves while they are whipping. This can be useful when wanting to stay in a specific direction or avoid clinging to ledges or walls.

Some Spelunkers, as well as Hired Hands and the Eggplant Child have a custom whip. Aside from looks, custom Spelunker whips act identically to the standard one. However, the whips used by Hired Hands and the Eggplant Child are still able to deal 1 damage to Spelunkers regardless of whether they are stunned or not, allowing them to easily kill the player when angered.

The Whip is the default starting weapon of the Spelunker. It is one of five melee weapons in the game, the others being the Machete, Mattock, Shield, and Crysknife.

Functionality

Extended Whip

A player using the whip.

The whip is used by pressing the Action button when the hands are empty, and is the only weapon besides the Crysknife that cannot be dropped and does not take up the held item slot.

When attacking with the whip, the Spelunker coils the whip behind him before swinging it forward, meaning there is a short animation delay before enemies in front of the Spelunker take damage. Players should learn to compensate for this by timing their attacks carefully, beginning the swing slightly before enemies come into its range, which is about one tile.

In addition to dealing damage to enemies, the whip can push and deflect physics objects, such as corpses, rocks, items, treasure (useful for no gold runs and Ghosting), and certain projectiles (arrows, boomerangsflies). The whip can also open containers like pots, crates, and chests, with the Locked Chest being a notable exception. Unlike other weapons, the whip is unable to do damage to stunned enemies, and can only push them around. It also cannot deal damage to particular enemies, such as Yetis and Shopkeepers.

The whip can be also be used to hit targets behind, above and below the Spelunker, as every frame of the whip animation deals damage. Each frame has the whip in a different position, meaning that the timing of the swing must be changed depending on what angle the player's target is at. If the user whips behind them, damage is done immediately, rather than on a delay. Deliberately turning around in order to hit an enemy with the first few frames of the whip attack is a technique commonly referred to as "backwhipping", and can be useful in defeating Bats and other enemies in awkward positions due to its diagonal hitbox.

While the whip animation plays, the Spelunker is unable to grab onto ledges, which can prevent the accidental halting of the player's descent. For casual players, this is often a dangerous tactic, as it can result in fall damage. Players also cannot turn around while the whip animation plays, which can be manipulated to their advantage.

Bugs

The Whip is the default starting weapon of the Spelunker. It is one of three melee weapons in the game, the others being the machete and the mattock.
It is used by pressing the Action button (Default: X) when the hands are empty, and is the only weapon that cannot be dropped and does not take up the held item slot.

Functionality

When attacking with the whip, the Spelunker coils the whip behind him before swinging it forward, meaning there is a short animation delay before enemies in front of the Spelunker take damage. Players should learn to compensate for this by timing their attacks carefully, beginning the swing slightly before enemies come into range.

The whip extends slightly more than one tile forward, and you can actually kill enemies by whipping them through a one-block-thick wall.

In addition to attacking forward, that whip can also be used to hit enemies behind the Spelunker using the backswing. The backswing's hitbox is a little higher than that of the forward strike, making it notably easier to damage enemies above you (such as spiders and bats) when facing away from them. The attack is also immediate, making it easier to aim than the forward whip. In addition, the backswing can deal damage to enemies multiple times in one swing, 1 damage per frame. This can only be used against enemies that have multiple HP and cannot be stunned, as once they are stunned, no further damage can be done. It is most effective against Giant Spiders, although it can also be used, at one's own risk, against Mummies and Alien Lords.

Some enemies (such as Yeti) are immune to damage from the whip, meaning you must attack them by other means, such as by stomping them.

Common uses of the whip include:

  • Attacking weak enemies.
  • Killing enemies above you (such as spider) just out of your normal reach by using the backswing.
  • Stunning Mantraps long enough for you to pass by them safely.
  • Destroying pots from a distance, ensuring the death of any hidden monsters that may lurk within them (Note that the backswing does not break pots).
    • Normally, pots can drop 1 item of treasure, an enemy, or may even be found empty. However, when broken with the whip, a bug causes the random generator to be rolled twice - pots might release two treasures, two enemies, or both treasure and an enemy at once. They may still release only one item if either of the results are 'nothing' or even not drop anything at all if the generator rolls for nothing twice.
  • Numerous unspeakable acts with Damsels, who do not take damage from its lashes.
