The Web Gun is a ranged weapon that launches blobs of web, and is a returning weapon from Spelunky HD. Despite its inability to cause direct damage, it nonetheless can still be a valuable combat/utility tool. It may be found sold in certain shops and rarely inside crates with a 1.16% chance of appearing from one.
The Web Gun, when triggered, will fire a burst of 3 web balls which will expand into webs upon contact with blocks or other objects. The range is similar to that of a thrown light object. The webs created from the weapon are temporary and will last for only about 10 seconds, but the Web Gun has infinite ammo like most other guns in the game. After firing, the Web Gun must proceed to reload for a second before it is able to fire again. The web balls have a slight spread, meaning they will not all land at the exact same spot.
This gun is not able to deal direct damage, but it has the ability to ensnare enemies in the webs and stop their movement, similar to the Freeze Ray. After an enemy has been trapped in this way, the player will be able to deal damage to them freely while staying out of attack range, unless the enemy has some variety of ranged attack.
The Web Gun is also able to stop projectiles mid-flight. This only works on some projectiles, as other more powerful projectiles like the buckshot of a Shotgun cannot be stopped. The strategy of stopping projectiles is still viable, as it can provide the player with great defense if used correctly, particularly against Arrows from either Arrow Traps or NPCs armed with Crossbows.
Shopkeepers will still be angered if they are hit with a web ball, even though no damage is caused.
When the player wears the Powerpack and holds a Web Gun, it will fire at a faster rate and have less reload time. Keep in mind that it will also reduce the recoil jump height.
One of the more common uses of the Web Gun is to assist in mobility or reaching more difficult areas. This method has been made harder in Spelunky 2, due to the webs slowing down vertical movement/jumping of players by a considerable degree.
When firing and jumping at the same time, a Web Gun will provide the same jump height as the shotgun, allowing the player to jump up 3 tiles. (Known as shotgun jumping)Bomb Paste, as a player can fire webs at a wall and then throw a bomb up into the webs.
They may be found sold in certain shops and rarely inside crates.
They are the second cheapest item in the game, tied with the parachute. They have a base value of $1800 plus an inflation increment of $200.
The weapon launches blobs of goo that become webs when they hit something. It has the approximate range of a light thrown object, and must spend a short time reloading after three shots. Like all ranged weapons, the Web Gun does not require ammunition and has unlimited usage. The projectiles of the Web Gun smash pots, crates and other breakable objects.
Although the webs fired from the weapon cause no direct damage, they are still useful in combat as they fully immobilize enemies that touch them (excluding all types of Spider and the Ghost, which are immune to the effects of webs). It can even ensnare flying enemies such as Bats in mid-air.
This allows for easy avoidance of enemies, or - if the Web Gun is dropped - the ability to whip enemies to death without fear of retaliation.
Webs can also be deployed beforehand to catch projectiles like a Tiki Man's Boomerang or a Mummy's Fly Swarm attack, but will not impede shotgun bullets or rays of psychic energy. This strategy should not be underestimated; a series of well-placed webs can make you untouchable.
Note that using the Web Gun on Shopkeepers will anger them, despite the fact it does not deal damage.
Another useful function of the Web Gun is the ability to use your own webs to help you navigate difficult terrain.
Webs can be fired across long gaps to create a safety net, as the weapon's range is about equal to the distance the Spelunker can jump. This can be used to form a safe landing spot when crossing dangerous terrain such as the long spike pits found in the Jungle, as webs that land on spikes will prevent you from falling onto them and getting stabbed.
If you jump and shoot at the same time, the recoil will let you pull off a three tile jump as if you had the Spring Shoes(four tiles if you have the Spring Shoes). You can also imitate the function of the climbing gloves with the Web Gun. By facing a wall and firing webs as you jump, you can stick yourself to the wall. You can repeat this by jumping out of the web and firing again, climbing as high as you need to.
By shooting web onto the sides of ledges too high to grab onto, you can jump, catch the web and climb up - effectively increasing the height at which you can climb ledges by one tile.
Webs also make for an excellent sticky bomb substitute. Simply shoot a web onto the place you wish to bomb, then throw the Bomb into the web.
Note that all varieties of spider are unaffected by webs; and the weapon does not work underwater.
Furthermore, unlike the webs generated as part of the environment, webs fired from the launcher will slowly disintegrate over time.

Although the webs fired from the weapon cause no direct damage, they are still useful in combat as they fully immobilize enemies that touch them (excluding Spiders, Giant Spiders and the Ghost which are immune to the effects of webs). This allows for easy avoidance, or - if the Web Gun is dropped - the ability to whip enemies to death safely.
To use the Web Gun well, you will need to plan your engagements with enemies carefully, as poorly placed webs can backfire.
You will need to wait out of sight, and place a web between yourself and the enemy, somewhere where it will likely get trapped in on its way to you. For Cavemen and Yeti, this is easy, but enemies like Frogs and Hawk Men can be tricky to predict.
Webs can also be deployed to catch projectile items like Arrows or the Mummy's Fly Swarm attack, but will not impede bullets fired from guns.
This strategy should not be underestimated; a series of well-placed webs can make you untouchable.
Another useful function of the Web Gun is the ability to use your own webs to reach places normally out of your reach.
Webs stack when fired on top of each other, allowing you to make structures that can be crossed by jumping through the webs. When stacked horizontally, they form a bridge that can be used to cross dangerous terrain (including lava, spikes and wide gaps).
When stacked vertically the web can also be used to rise upward. When fired on the ground, they break the falling speed which makes a useful safety net for climbing upward without using ropes.
Webs also makes for an excellent sticky bomb substitute. Simply shoot a web onto the place you wish to bomb, then throw the bomb into the web.
Note that both the large and small varieties of spider are immune to webs; and unlike the "natural" variety, webs fired from the launcher will slowly disintegrate over time. Furthermore, the web gun does not work underwater.
You can use the web gun to easily rob Shopkeepers since it is one of the few items that you can use without purchasing right away.
Launching the web at a shopkeeper will immobilise him (beware however that the web will not stop him from shooting at you) long enough to rob him and escape.
This is preferable to murder, as it means that the shopkeepers will eventually forgive you after a few levels (as long as you don't kill any others, which shouldn't be too difficult if you hang onto your web gun).
If you are so inclined, however, you can also use it to kill the shopkeeper:
- Pick up the web gun from the shop (or use your existing one if you have it)
- Lure the shopkeeper out of his cubby-hole (by carrying an item towards the entrance)
- Fire the web gun on the shopkeeper and immediately jump on top of the shopkeeper, avoiding the shotgun pellets.
- You will not get stuck on the web but rather continue to jump on the shopkeeper (do not move off until you are sure the shopkeeper is dead - this will happen before the web disappears)
