Vault

Vaults are small enclosed rooms filled with large amounts of treasure that occasionally generate deep underground, presumably containing the massive profits earned by the Shopkeeper's Association.

Features

Vaults can appear on any non-special and non-boss levels, with the exception of the first level in The Mines.

Every vault contains a shopkeeper and two high-value chests. The shopkeeper inside always spawns in an 'on guard' state with their Shotgun out, regardless of whether the Spelunker is wanted or not.

The vault is considered "shop tiles" to the game, meaning that it is also possible to sell a Golden Idol by placing it on a tile in the vault. It is easiest to perform this by placing the Idol on the roof of the vault. In a similar manner, placing a bomb on the roof will also cause the Shopkeeper to become aggressive the moment that it is placed.

Rewards

Vaultmattock

Killing a Shopkeeper inside of a Vault with a Mattock. This is also possible with a Machete.

The two chests within a vault are both filled with 6-8 random large gems each, together yielding 12-16 gems, a total of approximately $20,000 if plundered in the Mines.

Additionally, four large gold nuggets and a Shotgun may be looted from the Shopkeeper guarding the vault.

The value of the jewels in a vault can be multiplied several times by ghosting them into significantly more valuable diamonds, producing 12-16 diamonds worth at least $60,000 and at most $80,000.

However, it is possible to earn substantially more from a vault, with a possible consistent amount of $150,000. This is thanks to a glitch known as the render dupe, which takes advantage of how the game handles collected items. An in-depth guide on the render dupe can be seen here.

Crimeless Entry

There are two ways to enter a vault without angering the Shopkeeper inside; using a Teleporter to warp inside, or being lucky enough to have one of the tile making up the vault be a Push Block.

In the latter case, destroying the Push Block will not anger the Shopkeeper, allowing the player to take the chests without repercussion. Destroying only the Push Block can be incredibly difficult without a Mattock, and should only be attempted if the player possesses the skill to break the single tile with a bomb.

There is no penalty for pushing the block, allowing the player to enter the vault by pushing the block into the room, at the cost of crushing one or both of the two chests.

PushBlockVault

Using a Mattock to destroy a Push Block making up part of the vault, preventing the Shopkeeper inside from angering.

Strategy

  • Of course, attempting to steal from a vault will label the player as a criminal, denying them access to the services of the Shopkeeper's Association and forcing them to deal with Shopkeepers shooting at them on sight on top of ones waiting for the player at the level exit.
  • Vaults are only worth looting for score, as the player will not be able to spend any money they acquire at a shop due to becoming wanted, and looting a vault before visiting the Black Market may make acquiring the Ankh more difficult unless forgiveness is somehow achieved.
  • The twelve stone tiles that make up the vault are considered Shopkeeper property just like the blocks that make up a Shop. As a result, destroying any of them will have the Spelunker become wanted for vandalism, even if nothing is stolen and the Shopkeeper on guard is not harmed.
  • As always, players should try to avoid letting a Boulder smash through a vault, just as they would a shop or one of Kali's Altars.
