The Temple of Anubis is the Spelunky 2 version of Spelunky HD's Temple. In the sequel, the temple has received a massive new coat of Ancient Egyptian paint. Within the Temple of Anubis, a player can battle Anubis for his scepter, avoid deadly Croc Men, Mummies, and Giant Crush Traps, drink a powerful elixir to cure them of curse/poison, find their way to the legendary City of Gold, and by extension, ascend to the realm of Duat. Temple of Anubis is one of the two locations that a player can enter after Olmec's Lair, with the other option being Tide Pool. It is generally considered significantly harder than Tide Pool, due to the many hazards present that can easily end an inattentive player's run.

Features

The Temple of Anubis is construed of erratic, floating blocks, deadly Crush Traps, and mountains of sand.

4-1: Throne of Anubis

Upon entering the Temple of Anubis, the player will always encounter the namesake Egyptian god of death on the main path of the level. Defeating him will award you with the Scepter of Anubis. There is no other special feature in this level.

If the player rescued Van Horsing in Volcana and helped him kill Vlad in Vlad's Castle, he will appear in 4-1 in a back room. He will be cursed, and give you the Alien Compass.

Tips and Tricks

  • Spike Shoes and Bomb Paste are some of the most effective items against Anubis.
    • One can step on Anubis using Spike Shoes before he awakes, making way for an easy victory. It is not recommended to do this after he has awoken, as this will likely lead to him instantly killing the player with his scepter.
    • Bomb Paste will let the player easily dispatch of him using two bombs, regardless of whether he is awake or not.

4-2: The Golden Door & the Stars Challenge

Entering The City of Gold by using the Scepter on the Golden Door while the Hedjet/Crown is in the player's possession, while narrowly avoiding two crush traps.

Within 4-2, there will be a door of solid gold somewhere. If the player has either the Crown or Hedjet in their possession, they may use the Scepter to open the door, leading the way into The City of Gold.

Elsewhere in the level, a player can find Tun at the Star Challenge. Completing the challenge will award the player with an Elixir, curing the player of Curse and/or Poison, as well as healing the player. This item is rarely worth getting however, as if the player wishes to travel to the Duat, they must use the Ankh and lose their health.

4-3b: The City of Gold

If the player passed through the Golden Door in 4-2, they will be in The City of Gold for this stage. For more info, visit the article on The City of Gold. Otherwise, they will be in a standard Temple of Anubis level with no prominent features, aside from possible Level Feelings.

4-4b: Duat

If one sacrificed themselves on the Altar in The City of Gold, this level will serve as the Duat. For more info, visit the article on Duat. If the player either took the normal exit from The City of Gold or did not go to the city at all, 4-4 will be a standard Temple of Anubis level with no special occurrences, other than Level Feelings.

The Temple is the fourth and final main area of the caves, reached from level 3-4 of The Ice Caves. Anubis can be found on level 4-1, the Golden Door can be found on level 4-2 leading to the City of Gold (which replaces 4-3 if you can get into it), while Olmec's Lair is found at the end, on level 4-4.

Geography

The Temple normally consists of narrow passageways through bricked terrain. There are many valuable Gems found the the bricks in the Temple, but some are hard to get to and use up a lot of Bombs.

Notes:

  • The Shopkeeper will only attack you if you hurt him or try to steal something from him.
  • You can avoid getting hit by Monsters that come out of Monster Pots by throwing Pots away from you instead of attacking them with the Whip or other melee weapons.
  • Snakes, spiders, frogs, fire frogs, killer bees and snails can only appear in the temple if spawned by Olmec. Keep care that snakes, spiders and scorpions can appear inside of pots.

Special Features/Traps

Altars to Kali

Altars to Kali are places to give sacrifices to the God Kali, the Goddess of Empowerment. Sacrificing dead enemies and Damsels will reward the player with items, and the Kapala, an item only found when sacrificing.

Tiki Trap

Tiki Trap are found on the Temple, two are usually guarding the exit. Tiki Traps can deal 4 damage, which is the player's starting amount.

Crush Trap

Crush Traps are only found in the Temple and the City of Gold. They can instantly kill a player, as they push and then squish the player onto a wall.

Ceiling Trap

Ceiling Traps guard the Golden Idol on the Temple. When the idol is moved or picked up, the player is trapped in the room and spikes come from the ceiling, and move down, crushing the player.

Lava

Lava is found in the Temple and Hell. It acts like water, and can be drained, but will instantly kill anything but Magma Men, as it spawns them.

Golden Door

The Golden Door on level 4-2 can only be opened if you have brought along both the Hedjet from The Ice Caves and the Scepter from defeating Anubis on level 4-1. It leads to the City of Gold, which can vastly increase your money score if you can enter with a large supply of Bombs.

Level Feelings

"You hear prayers to Kali!"

A deep pit spawns with numerous arrow traps and a pool of lava at the bottom. A Damsel and a Golden Idol can be found suspended above on a platform. Picking up the Idol causes the platform to disintegrate instantly, sending the Spelunker into the pit.

"I can't see a thing!"

The level will be engulfed in darkness with only a few light sources scattered throughout the mine, including Golden Scarabs and torches.

The Temple is the fourth and final main area of the caves, starting on level 13. Olmec's Lair is found at the end, on level 16.

Geography

The area consists of narrow passageways through bricked terrain, and the level may also contain trees or grassy terrain in limited areas. Treasure  may be found in the walls if the walls are destroyed with either Bombs or a Mattock. One of the levels will randomly contain the door to the City of Gold, which can only be opened with a Scepter while wearing the Hedjet.

Special Features

Kali's Altars

Kali's Altars can appear on certain levels of every area. You can sacrifice dead or knocked out creatures by dropping them onto the Altar. Depending on your sacrifice, she will gift you or not with items. If you destroy the Altar, she will be displeased with you and spawn a group of spiders on you, even if the destruction was by another creature.

Golden Idol

Golden Idols may appear randomly on each of the levels.  They are placed beneath a Ceiling Trap which will trap the Spelunker in the room with sliding doors as soon as he grabs the Idol. The Ceiling will slowly descend until they reach the floor, and are guaranteed to crush the Spelunker if he does not escape through the use of a Bomb or Mattock to break out of the sealed room.

Level Feelings

Sacrificial Pit

A deep and narrow pit will be generated in the level with a Golden Idol and a Damsel suspended at the top on blocks that will instantly disintegrate as soon as the Spelunker picks up the Idol. Arrow TrapsTiki Traps, and a Lava Pool are waiting to kill you as soon as you fall in.

Darkness

The level will be engulfed in darkness with only a few light sources scattered throughout, including Scarabs and torches. You will be give a Box of Flares containing three individual Flares.
