The Ice Caves is the fifth level in Spelunky 2. Unlike its previous incantations from Spelunky HD and Classic, the Ice Caves in Spelunky 2 is one large, singular level instead of four smaller ones. It is accessed after completing either Temple of Anubis, Tide Pool or one of their secret areas (Abzu, Duat), and leads into world 6, Neo Babylon.

Ice caves full

An instance of the full Ice Caves level. Note that the Wet Fur cave and The Mothership are not visible here, as they are both sub-areas.

The Ice Caves consists of a multitude of disconnected platforms, similar to its previous incarnations. Many hazards here can lead to the the player's instant death, such as Yetis throwing them into the Abyss or repeatedly into a wall, exploding UFOs, Landmines, and Spring Traps jettisoning the player into a set of ceiling Spikes.

Though the entire world is only a single level and a single chunk thinner than the average level, the area makes up for it with its massive height of 13 chunks, densely packed with secrets.

The player can meet small penguins as well as fireflies, who emit a loud, harmonica-like sound heard throughout the level.

Occasionally, Cavemen are seen relaxing beside campfires. They may also be found encased within ice just like Mounts can, requiring the block they are trapped within to be destroyed in order to be freed.

The Ice Caves consists of 3 main sections. When the spelunker enters the area, they will complete a small section of a standard level before going into the background, which resembles a wet fur level from Spelunky HD, before returning to the rest of the normal level and finding the level exit. The Mothership may be visited as well, where the player can secure a powerful Plasma Cannon.

Section 1: The Moai, Waddler's Cave

EggplantChild

Opening The Moai using an Eggplant to get to the Eggplant Child.

The first section of the Ice Caves is mostly standard world generation, with the exception of the Moai Head, where the player can meet the Eggplant Child by leaving the Eggplant on the purple altar beside it. The player can enter the wet fur cave through a doorway at the bottom of this section.

Ice waddler

Finding Waddler's cave by entering the Wet Fur Cave.

Waddler's cave may also be found here, hidden behind a wall in the chunk layer just above the entrance to the Wet Fur cave.

Section 2: Wet Fur Cave

Wet Fur Cave S2

"It smells like wet fur in here!"

This sub-area contains the Yeti King and Queen, among numerous Yetis. The Queen is located on the top half, while the King is located on the bottom. The bottom of the section contains spikes and the exit, while the Coffin containing the Spelunker Demi von Diamonds can be found here near the top.

Wet Fur Skip

Wet Fur Skip Tile

The specific tile used to descend down past the wet fur cave.

It is possible to skip the wet fur cave containing the Yeti King and Queen, even without extra mobility.

The entrance to the wet fur cave always has at least one tile just under it. Because of a quirk in the level generation, falling after hanging from this specific tile will always result in the player ending up on a ledge just beside the exit to the wet fur cave, skipping the entire section.

  • Note that if the player moves at all during their descent, they will not cling to the next possible ledge and die.
    • In extremely rare situations, a UFO may crash onto the specific tiles that the player needs to hang onto as part of their landing, rendering this skip deadly.
  • The player can also skip the wet fur cave with almost any type of mobility item, such as Capes, Climbing Gloves, or the Jetpack.
Wet Fur Skip

Performing the wet fur skip.

Section 3: Exit + Mothership Entrance

MothershipEntrance2

Entering The Mothership by using the Alien Compass to find where the door to it spawned.

After the wet fur cave is completed or bypassed, the Spelunker will enter the final section. It contains identical world generation to the initial area, with the exception that no guaranteed landmarks may spawn in this section, and only Shops, Boulders, and Altars may.

Directly below this section is the endless Abyss. Just below where the screen stops scrolling downwards is the entrance to The Mothership, supported by a small one tile wide platform. Although it randomly appears in a different location every time, its location is easily revealed by the Alien Compass.
