The Ice Caves is the fifth level in Spelunky 2. Unlike the other Ice Caves from Spelunky HD and Classic, the Ice Caves in Spelunky 2 is one large, singular level instead of four smaller ones. It is accessed after exiting world 4 (either Temple of Anubis or Tide Pool) and leads into world 6, Neo Babylon.

Features

An instance of the full Ice Caves level. Note that the Wet Fur cave and The Mothership are not visible here, as they are both sub-areas.

The Ice Caves consists of a multitude of disconnected platforms, similar to its predecessors. Many hazards here can lead to the the player's instant death, such as Yetis throwing them into the Abyss, exploding UFOs and Landmines, and Spring Traps jettisoning the player into a set of ceiling Spikes.

Occasionally, Cavemen are seen relaxing beside campfires or even encased within ice, only freed when the block is destroyed.

The Ice Caves consists of 3 main sections. When the spelunker enters the area, they will complete a small section of a standard level before going into the background, which resembles a wet fur level from Spelunky HD, before returning to the rest of the normal level and finding the level exit.

Section 1: The Moai, Waddler's Cave

Opening The Moai using an Eggplant to get to the Eggplant Child.

The first section of the ice caves contains the Moai Head, where the player can meet the Eggplant Child by leaving the Eggplant on the purple altar beside the Moai, along with standard dangers in the Ice Caves. The player can enter the wet fur cave through a doorway at the bottom of this section.

Finding Waddler's cave by entering the Wet Fur Cave.

Waddler's cave may also be found here, hidden behind a wall somewhere near the entrance to the Wet Fur cave.

Section 2: Wet Fur Cave

"It smells like wet fur in here!"

This sub-area contains the Yeti King and Queen, among numerous Yetis. The Queen is located on the top half, while the King is located on the bottom. The bottom of the section contains spikes and the exit, while the Coffin containing the Spelunker Demi von Diamonds can be found here near the top.

Section 3: Exit + Mothership Entrance

Entering The Mothership by using the Alien Compass to find where the door to it spawned.

After the background is completed or bypassed using a mobility accessory, the Spelunker will enter the final section. It is similar to the first, but is significantly longer. Directly below this section is The Abyss. Just below where the screen stops scrolling downwards is the entrance to The Mothership, supported by a small two block wide platform. It's location is revealed by the Alien Compass.

The Ice Caves is the third area of the caves in Spelunky, and is accessed from level 2-4 of The Jungle. Level 3-4 leads to the fourth area, The Temple, along with an alternate exit in one of the upper corners leading to The Mothership.

Geography

The Ice Caves consist of large open caverns with snowy or icy ledges (which are slippery unless wearing Spike Shoes), and unlike in previous areas, there is no bottom floor to each level. Instead the bottom of each level is an obviously deadly fall into the abyss. This can make it difficult or impossible to reach the exit if you end up at the bottom on the wrong side of the level, making the Compass unusually valuable here. Gold and Jewels may be found in the walls if the walls are destroyed with either bombs or a Mattock. One of the levels will randomly contain the Moai statue, whose interior can only be accessed by dying on that level while in possession of the Ankh purchased at the Black Market or by teleporting in with the Teleporter (note that it is much safer and reliable to teleport inside the statue vertically rather than from the side). Teleporting inside the Moai statue will not allow you to enter the City of Gold as the player will get a diamond gem when teleporting inside, and to acquire the Hedjet they still need to suicide.

Dangers

All Monsters and Traps (besides The Ghost) that can be harmful/hostile in The Ice Caves.

UFO

Notes:

  • The Shopkeeper will only attack you if you hurt him or try to steal something from him.
  • You can avoid getting hit by Monsters that come out of Monster Pots by throwing Pots away from you instead of attacking them with the Whip or other melee weapons.
  • Sometimes when you are destroying an ice block with a Mattock you can find a Caveman in them.
  • Piranhas will only spawn rarely if a room with water generates.

Level Feelings

"It smells like wet fur in here!"

The level will be much more maze-like, and a Yeti King will spawn somewhere inside. There will also be more Yetis than usual.

"I sense a psychic presence here..."

The level will contain a crashed spaceship near the middle, containing Turrets, Forcefields, and an Alien Lord. A Jetpack is guaranteed to spawn in the wall behind the Alien Lord.

"It feels like the fourth of July!"

On either the left or right side of the level, there is a tall futuristic structure heading up to the ceiling, containing an alternate exit leading to The Mothership. Also, a large amount of UFOs will spawn in the level. This level feeling only, and always, occurs on level 3-4.

Special Features

Kali's Altars

Kali's Altars can appear on certain levels of every area. You can sacrifice dead or knocked out creatures by dropping them onto the Altar. Depending on your sacrifice, she will gift you or not with items. If you destroy the Altar, she will be displeased with you and spawn a group of spiders on you, even if the destruction was by another creature.

Golden Idol

Golden Idols may appear randomly on each of the levels.  The Idol will be on Thin Ice suspended above Spikes. Quickly grabbing the idol before the ice breaks and jumping onto a nearby platform or pre-placed Rope may be your best bet of not dying on the spikes.

Level Feelings

"It smells like wet fur in here!"

The level will be much more maze-like, making it much easier not to fall into the Abyss, and a Yeti King will spawn somewhere inside. There will also be more Yetis than usual.

"I sense a psychic presence here..."

The level will contain a very long spaceship near the middle, containing Yetis, a Forcefield, and an Alien Lord. A Jetpack is guaranteed to spawn in the wall behind the Alien Lord.
