Spiders' first movement from their initial stationary position is always directly downwards, after which they will tend to move in an erratic and difficult to predict diagonal jumping motion. This means that, if a spider must be disturbed before it can be killed (if you have no projectiles, for examples, or if it is in a sheltered position that you are compelled to move past) it is often best to try to kill it at the nadir of its initial "drop", rather than letting it start moving around first.

Spider1block2block

A spider that lands near a one-high ledge can sometimes jump sideways, but a spider that lands near a two-high ledge will always jump straight up, making it easy to jump on it.

Spiders are usually found hanging from the ceiling in the caves of World 1. However, they may also be found hiding in pots in any of the four Worlds. They will only drop down if you go directly underneath them, but will detect this at a much greater length than their cousins, the Giant spiders.

Spiders die in one hit from being whipped, jumped on, or having an item thrown at them. If you can approach a spider before it leaves its ceiling, whipping it with your back facing it is often easier than facing it. Spiders will drown if submerged in water. (Area 2, when spawned from clay pots)

Spiders that fall into water will die. If you're being pursued by multiple spiders, walking into a set of spikes and crouching will protect you from harm; a spider that attempts to jump onto you will land on the spikes and die before it can deal damage to you.
