Rope (Spelunky 2) | Rope (Spelunky HD) | Rope (Spelunky Classic) |
Ropes are single use equipment items in Spelunky 2.
Obtaining[]
The player starts with 4 ropes in singleplayer. Along with bombs, these starting ropes are split evenly with their teammates in multiplayer.
In a 3 player game where bombs and ropes cannot be evenly split, one of the three players is given the extra remaining rope and bomb.

Functionality[]
Pressing the Rope button throws a single rope from the player's inventory directly upward. If the rope button is pressed while crouching, the base of the rope is placed directly in front of the player, unfurling downwards.
Ropes are 7 tiles long and function identically to ladders as a climbable object. NPCs and Spelunkers alike can climb ropes, which includes Shopkeepers. Ropes fall back down in item form if they're thrown into an area without a background wall.
Ropes deal 1 damage to anything in their way when thrown upwards. Dealing damage this way is colloquially known as "roping". This can be used for a variety of scenarios, such as against Monkeys and Leprechauns, which can be removed from the player's back with a thrown rope. NPCs are reliably stunned by ropes as well, which can be useful for stealing from Shopkeepers or other combat related scenarios.
Ropes can be ignited by fire sources. This slowly burns them from the bottom up, until only the base of the rope remains climbable.
Custom Ropes[]
All Spelunkers have a special custom Rope. All ropes function identically, and some have their own unique sound.
Custom Rope Sounds[]
Default: Rope hooks onto wall.
Colin Northward: Rope suction cup attaches to wall.
Nekka the Eagle: The vine-like Rope makes an organic attaching noise.
LISE Project: The electrical plug at the end of the Rope makes a soft attaching noise as it inserts into the background.
Manfred Tunnel: Sound of Rope "Digging" into wall.
Tina Flan: The carabiner clip at the end of the Rope "clanks" onto the background with a loud metal sound.
Valerie Crump: The chewed gum at the end of the Rope sticks to the wall.
Au: Deploying plays a loud, tube like unfurling noise.
Pilot: The arm-like Rope makes a rubbery flailing sound as it is thrown upward.
Classic Guy: The Rope makes the same sound effects as it did in Spelunky Classic.
