Cavemen are an enemy in Spelunky 2.

They are a relatively common enemy found in Dwelling, Jungle, Volcana, Ice Caves, and Neo Babylon pens. They can also be summoned by the boss found at the end of Neo Babylon.

Occasionally, live Cavemen can be found encased in frozen tiles in Ice Caves, and Caveman corpses can be found in hidden backlayers with a Ghist bound to them.

Behavior[]

If a Caveman spots a Spelunker in front of them, they yell and charge forwards, even running off of ledges, only calming down if they are stunned or fall into a 1 tile wide gap. They deal 1 damage on contact.

Otherwise, they can be found calmly patrolling the caves, completely unaware of everything not directly in front of them. Some cavemen start asleep, and can be awoken by loud sounds or the spelunkers getting near. If disturbed, they blink 1-4 times before waking up in a rage.

Cavemen can occasionally be seen riding Mounts. They can be seen riding Rock Dogs in Volcana and Axolotls in Tide Pool, but otherwise can ride Cave Turkeys in any area other than Dwelling or the game's final world. They patrol and charge identically to normal cavemen, but can move at wild speeds and will order their mount to shoot at the player if applicable. Relieving the mount of its Caveman rider leaves it tamed and passive to Spelunkers.

Cavemen have 3 HP, can be stunned, and leave a corpse behind. They give 2 favor when offered live to a Kali Altar and 1 favor when offered dead.

Item Interactions[]

Cavemen can pick up items and treasure in front of them when in their passive state, but do not think to throw, let alone use them. This can sometimes be detrimental to their well being, such as picking up an Idol rigged to a trap. They can also put on Backwear, but don't know how to use them either.

When provoked, a charging caveman can trip over items (weapons, rocks, etc.) on the floor, stunning them momentarily. If they were holding a Shotgun or Freeze Ray, tripping causes their finger to slip over the trigger, unknowingly firing the weapon.

Cavemen drop any items they were carrying in hand when they trip, which can have a variety of consequences. For example, a Caveman carrying an Idol can trip over an item while inside of a Shop. This causes him to drop the Idol, which sells it to the Shopkeeper. This sale is unfairly attributed to the Spelunker, however.

Trivia[]

  • Cavemen are Spelunky creator Derek Yu's favorite enemy.
  • Cavemen found frozen in Ice Caves is a nod to Ötzi the Iceman, a natural ice mummy from around 3200 B.C., found by scientists in the Tyrol Alps of Europe.
