Spelunkers (HD)

There are 20 different playable Spelunkers available in Spelunky HD that can be used in all single player and multiplayer game modes.

Each of the Spelunkers have identical abilities; the differences between them are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay.

Four are available from the beginning, but the remaining sixteen must be unlocked by fulfilling certain requirements.

Unlocking all 16 secret characters earns the Achievement 'The Entire Gang'.

A padlock in the character selection menu tells you how many Spelunkers remains to be unlocked.

In the Playstation 3 port, The Eskimo, The Round Girl, The Round Boy, The Ninja, The Cyclops, The Viking, The Robot, And The Golden Monk all come free with purchase of the game.This means that you no longer need to purchase The Cyclops from the Black Market for $10,000.

List of Spelunkers

Almost all the Spelunkers will be found inside Coffins, most are tied to a specific Level Feeling while some just need to be found inside the main four areas, the Coffin page has a better explanation of how Coffin generation works.

Spelunky Guy Color: Orange Appearance: A character based on the Indiana Jones archetype of the 'Adventurer Archaeologist', with a very prominent red nose. Unlock: Available from the beginning.	Colin Northward Color: Blue Appearance: A man dressed as an early 20th century Safari hunter, with a pith helmet and hulihee beard.He is a cameo of Colin Northway. Unlock: Available from the beginning.	"Red" Color: Red Appearance: A mustachioed man wearing a Turban. Unlock: Available from the beginning.
"Green" Color: Green Appearance: A woman with a green bow in her curled hair. Unlock: Available from the beginning.	"Yellow" Color: Yellow Appearance: A woman wearing a miner's helmet. Unlock:Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once she is released.	"Lime" Color: Lime Appearance: A man dressed in Mariachi clothing. Unlock: Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once he is released.
Margaret Tunnel Color: Purple Appearance: A woman dressed as a pirate with an eyepatch, bandanna and gold earrings. Unlock: Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once she is released.	"Cyan" Color: Cyan Appearance: A man wearing a furry cyan animal hood, a purple jacket and green pants. Unlock: Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once he is released.	Van Helsing Color: Black Appearance: Van Helsing, the Vampire hunter from Bram Stoker's Dracula. Unlock: Found inside a coffin at the top of the Haunted Castle level.
The Jungle Warrior Color: Brown Appearance: A tribal warrior, wearing a loincloth and a jaguar headdress. Unlock: Defeat Olmec and get to the exit.	Meat Boy Color: Pink Appearance: A representation of Meat boy, drawn in Spelunky's graphical style. He is a cameo character from Super Meat Boy. Unlock: Found inside a dark green pod near the end of the Worm.	Yang Color: White Appearance: A man dressed in traditional Chinese clothing. Unlock: Defeat King Yama and get to the exit.
The Eskimo Color: Magenta Appearance: An Inuk wearing a parka. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in a Yeti Kingdom level.	The Round Girl Color: Violet Appearance: A 'round' girl, wearing glasses and a hairband. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in a Spider's Lair level.	The Ninja Color: Dark Green Appearance: A ninja wearing a Yin-Yang bandanna. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in Olmec's Chamber.
The Round Boy Color: Mint Green Appearance: A 'round' boy wearing a cap. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in a Tiki Village in the Jungle.	The Cyclops Color: Dark Orange Appearance: A goofy cyclops. He is a cameo character from another work by lead programmer Andy Hull. Unlock: Can be bought from the Black Market for $10,000, or simply 'kidnapped'. May also be found in a coffin after seeing him in the Black Market.	The Viking Color: Pale Grey Appearance: An archetypical Nordic Viking. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in a Flooded Cavern or "The Dead Are Restless" level.
The Robot Color: Dark Grey Appearance: A blocky cartoon robot with treads. Unlock: Found inside a capsule in the Mothership.	The Golden Monk Color: Gold Appearance: A golden Buddhist Monk that sparkles like treasure. Unlock: Found inside a coffin in the City of Gold.

Cameos

• The Blue safari character is based on Colin Northway, a friend of Spelunky's developer Derek Yu.
• Meat Boy makes an appearance in Spelunky HD as homage to Edmund McMillen's Super Meat Boy games.
  This may be a reference to how Spelunky Guy also features as an unlockable character in Super Meat Boy for XBLA.
• The Cyclops is based on the titular character of What is bothering Carl? an interactive storybook created by Spelunky's lead programmer Andy Hull. This is referenced in the pop-up prompt to purchase the character when he appears in the Black Market, which reads 'Bother Carl'.
