Spelunky shares a number of features common to roguelikes, including:
- Permanent death — games can't be saved/loaded, nor can you easily revive yourself like you can in many RPGs
- Randomly generated levels
- Death occurs frequently
- It's a dungeon crawl
Features that are different from traditional roguelikes:
- It's an action platformer instead of a top-down RPG.
