Quicksand is a common hazard found in the Temple of Anubis. Quicksand tiles can be differentiated from normal sand tiles by the dust cloud particles that they constantly emit.

The main paths and sub-areas in Temple of Anubis typically contain large pockets of quicksand that are typically necessary to navigate throughout the background area without the use of Bombs or a Mattock.

Function[]

When an item or entity enters the quicksand, it will begin slowly sinking downward into it until it either reaches the bottom or falls out on the other side. Quicksand may be "swam" through by Spelunkers who repeatedly press the jump button through it, albeit slowly.

Back Items cannot be activated inside quicksand, although they can remain active if the player enters the quicksand with it still active, effectively allowing a player to rapidly ascend through quicksand with a Jetpack.

Much like water, it is not possible to "drown" in quicksand, and entities may remain in quicksand indefinitely without suffocating.

Temple Quicksand S2

A large bed of quicksand.

Although items and entities may (slowly) pass through the quicksand, tiles cannot; Crush Traps stop when hitting quicksand and cannot crush anything inside of them. The venomous spit of a Cobra will pass through quicksand and sink down it just like any other item.

Daggers fired from a Sorceress, as well as projectiles fired from weapons like the Shotgun and Freeze Ray, will consider quicksand a wall and break when hitting its surface.

Paste Bombs do not stick to quicksand, and will sink down it just like any other item.

Strategy[]

  • When wanting to move downwards through quicksand, Spelunkers should repeatedly move left and right in order to cause the sand to swallow the player faster.
  • Ascending through quicksand with the Jetpack is always the fastest method of doing so. Players will otherwise have to slowly trudge their way upward by repeatedly jumping.
  • Much like webs, remaining suspended in quicksand will not reset the scaling damage of Spike Shoes, so long as the player does not touch the ground. This can be used to easily defeat Anubis, Mummies, or other high-health enemies.
  • Quicksand can be a great way to avoid Crush Traps — provided that the player has a way out of the sand after the Crush Trap stops beside the quicksand.
  • Throwing Paste Bombs at quicksand is an easy way for a player to accidently stick one onto themselves as it sinks back down onto them, almost guaranteeing 11 HP of damage.
