Certain NPCs offer quests for the Spelunker to complete in Spelunky 2. Quests provide the player with rewards and sometimes items that cannot be obtained anywhere else. Reaching key points of quests will add a bright white star to the Spelunker's constellation if they make it to the end of Cosmic Ocean.
Quests[]
A general rule for all quests is that angering and/or killing the NPC offering the quest will end the quest instantly. This will cause the quest's bright white constellation star to be removed if the quest reached that point or progessed past it.
Yang[]
Dwelling[]
Yang can be found in Dwelling 1-2 or 1-3 with a pen containing a turkey. When approached, he will say "I'm looking for turkeys... wanna help?" The level containing his pen will always have two other turkeys. If both turkeys are brought to him and placed into the pen, he will say "Wow, thanks! Please help yourself to my treasure." and give the Spelunker a key, allowing access to the pen's backlayer where three randomly chosen treasure items can be found. This treasure can be gold bars, gems, pots, skulls, chests, crates, or nothing.
Pet Shop[]
If Yang was given two turkeys in Dwelling, he can be found running his own Pet Shop early in Jungle or Volcana. This shop will always be selling three turkeys and a Rope Pile. Buying a turkey from his shop will greatly increase the spawn chances of turkeys for the rest of the run and add a bright white star to the constellation.
Palace of Pleasure[]
If all three turkeys from Yang's Pet Shop were purchased, Yang can be found in the Palace of Pleasure in Neo Babylon 6-3. He will be running back and forth and will say "I didn't realize they'd be serving turkey here..."
Black Market[]
Unrelated to Yang's quest, he can be found in the Black Market above the shop selling the Hedjet. When approached, he will say "I'm just doing a little shopping!"
Lake of Fire warning[]
Unrelated to Yang's quest, he can be found in Tide Pool 4-3 at the end of the backlayer tunnel that leads to under the Lake of Fire. When approached, he will say "Careful friend... that's a one-way door!"
Notes[]
- The turkeys in Dwelling can sometimes die to Totem Traps when the level begins, which causes the quest to become impossible to complete.
- Yang will automatically anger if a dead/cooked turkey gets near him, saying "I will avenge my feathered friends!" in the process.
- Angering/killing Yang will remove the increased turkey spawn rates if the quest progressed past that point.
The Three Sisters[]
Jungle[]
The Three Sisters, Parsley, Parsnip, and Parmesan, can be found trapped in backlayers in Jungle in 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4 respectively. Approaching a trapped sister will have them say "Thanks! I can't believe I got stuck in here." and will free them. Saving all three sisters will add a bright white star to the constellation.
Olmec's Lair[]
The sisters who were saved will appear at the top-right area of Olmec's Lair, at the clearing for the exit from the backlayer. When approached, one of the sisters will say "Here's a little something to help you out!" In front of them will be an item; the more sisters saved, the better the item will be.
Lake of Fire warning[]
If Parsley was saved, she can be found in Tide Pool 4-3 at the end of the backlayer tunnel that leads to under the Lake of Fire. When approached, she will say "I don't have a good feeling about that door."
Ice Caves[]
If Parmesan was saved, she can be found in Ice Caves 5-1 at the left side of the Yeti Cave backlayer. When approached, she will say "Brrr! I wish I brought a jacket!"
Palace of Pleasure[]
If Parsnip was saved, she can be found in the Palace of Pleasure in Neo Babylon 6-3 at the top-left. When approached, she will "Great party, huh?"
Notes[]
- Angering/killing one of the sisters will cause the other sisters to not appear at all in the other Jungle levels.
- If the player does not care about the reward in Olmec's Lair, they can anger Parsley in 2-2 to make the sisters in 2-3 and 2-4 not appear. This can potentially increase the chances of finding a Kali Altar, because there is now an extra room for the chance to pass in the level generation process.
Van Horsing[]
Volcana[]
Van Horsing can be found trapped in a locked backlayer in Volcana 2-1. Somewhere else in the level, a backlayer can be found that contains a key. Approaching the trapped Van Horsing will have him say "Tusk won't be happy about this, but thank you.", give the Spelunker a diamond, and will free him.
Vlad's Castle[]
If Van Horsing was freed earlier in Volcana, he will be found at the top of Vlad's Castle with his crossbow drawn. When Vlad enters Van Horsing's line of sight, he will fire the metal arrow at Vlad, instantly killing if the shot hits. When Vlad is killed, Van Horsing will say "I've been hunting this fiend a long time!" Reaching this point of the quest will add a bright white star to the constellation.
Temple of Anubis[]
If the Spelunker helped Van Horsing kill Vlad, he can be found cursed in a backlayer in Temple of Anubis 4-1. When approached, he will say "It's not looking good for me. Take this." and give the Spelunker the Alien Compass. If the Spelunker encounters Van Horsing here while cursed themselves, he will instead say "Ha! A pair of unfortunate souls. Take this!"
Palace of Pleasure[]
If Van Horsing was encountered in Temple of Anubis, he can be found in the Palace of Pleasure in Neo Babylon 6-3. He will be found to the right of the Kali Altar, beyond the forcefield where the Curse Pot is found. Approaching the forcefield will have him say "At least she removed my curse..." and his curse from Temple of Anubis will be cured.
Lake of Fire warning[]
If the Spelunker goes to Tide Pool after helping Van Horsing kill Vlad, he can be found in Tide Pool 4-3 at the end of the backlayer tunnel that leads to under the Lake of Fire. When approached, he will say "I sense danger beyond that door."
Notes[]
- Van Horsing himself does not need to kill Vlad to progress the quest.
Madame Tusk[]
Tide Pool[]
Madame Tusk can be found as the owner of a Dice House in Tide Pool. If the Spelunker wins all five items from the Dice House, done by rolling five sevens total, Madame Tusk will say "High roller, eh! Come see me at my Palace of Pleasure..." and give the Spelunker an invitation to her Palace of Pleasure in Neo Babylon 6-3.
Palace of Pleasure[]
If the Spelunker was invited to the Palace of Pleasure, the Bodyguard at the entrance will say "Come right in. Madame is expecting you." and they will be allowed inside. The Palace contains a Four-Leaf Clover, two Cooked Turkeys, one Royal Jelly, an Idol, and a Kali Altar in the basement. Approaching Madame Tusk in the Palace's highest floor will have her say "Oh, it's you! Please rest and enjoy my food!" If Madame Tusk is approached while the Spelunker is poisoned and/or cursed, she will instead say "Oh my, you arrived in such a condition?!" Talking to Madame Tusk in the Palace will add a bright white star to the constellation.
Notes[]
- Hitting a die mid-roll with the whip will always cause it to roll a 1 or a 6.
- Angering Madame Tusk in Tide Pool will make the Bodyguards in Neo Babylon 6-3 have their shotguns drawn. Approaching the Bodyguards will make them attack.
- If Madame Tusk is killed in Tide Pool, then Neo Babylon 6-3 will not feature the Palace of Pleasure. It will generate like a normal level instead.
Sparrow[]
Thief[]
Sparrow's questline is started by stealing an item from a Shopkeeper's shop. The item must be stolen by having the item exit the shop, making the Shopkeeper say "Stop, thief!" in the process. The quest will not start if the Shopkeeper says "Vandal!" instead.
First meeting[]
The backlayer entrance where Sparrow appears, seen in Jungle.
If the Spelunker was called a thief by a Shopkeeper, two levels later, a unique room with a layer door will appear somewhere in the level. This backlayer contains Sparrow, who, when approached, will say "You're good... but are you good enough to steal from Madame Tusk?" and will give the Spelunker a Rope Pile. If the player is playing as Dirk Yamamoka and approaches Sparrow, she will instead say "Big brother! I never thought I'd catch you thieving..."
The Tusk Idol[]
If the Spelunker met Sparrow earlier, then The Tusk Idol will be found in the locked room in front of Madame Tusk's Dice House in Tide Pool. A key or Skeleton Key is needed to open the door. Madame Tusk drops a key when killed, but killing her here prevents the quest from progressing past this point. Once The Tusk Idol is obtained, it needs to be converted to money, which is done by bringing it to the exit or selling it in a shop. If Tusk's Bodyguard sees The Tusk Idol, he will say "Someone's trying to rob Madame!" and both the Bodyguard and Madame Tusk will anger.
Second meeting[]
If the Spelunker stole The Tusk Idol and converted it to money, Sparrow will be found in a backlayer in Neo Babylon 6-1. When approached, she will say "I'm impressed! Meet me at the Palace of Pleasure if you really want to get rich..."
Palace of Pleasure[]
If the Spelunker met Sparrow earlier in Neo Babylon, she will be found in the Palace of Pleasure in 6-3. The lower door of the palace, which normally features a Bodyguard and a locked door, will now feature a dead Bodyguard and an open door. Beyond this door is another dead Bodyguard and Sparrow. When approached, she will say "If you get past the lasers, I'll split the treasure with you." The Spelunker now must find a way past the three forcefields to the left to reach the Palace's vault of eight chests. This can be done either by destroying the forcefields or by teleporting around them. Once in the vault, the Spelunker is allowed to open only four chests, leaving the other four for Sparrow. When the Spelunker returns to Sparrow, she will say "Good work! We make a great team!" and will give them a Player Bag containing 24 ropes. Reaching this point of the quest will add a bright white star to the constellation.
If the Spelunker opens five chests, Sparrow will anger and say "Hey, that's my share!" This can be done after receiving the Player Bag, but the constellation star will be lost.
Notes[]
The backlayer entrance where Sparrow appears, seen in Tide Pool.
- If Sparrow's quest is never started and the Spelunker goes to where The Tusk Idol would appear, a note can be found that reads "Too bad. I got here first."
- Shopkeeper forgiveness can be obtained and Sparrow's quest can still be done.
- The level where the first meeting takes place is two levels after where the Spelunker was called a thief. If the Spelunker was called a thief in 2-1, Sparrow will be found in 2-3. Dwelling 1-4, Vlad's Castle, and Olmec's Lair 3-1 will delay Sparrow appearing by a level.
- The first meeting can take place in Tide Pool 4-1. If this happens, Madame Tusk's Dice House will instead appear in 4-3 or rarely 4-4.
- If Sparrow is never met or is angered/killed in the first meeting, The Tusk Idol will be present, but the quest cannot be progressed any further.
- If the player just wants to obtain The Tusk Idol for its Journal entry, Sparrow can be killed at the first meeting for a Skeleton Key to open the door to The Tusk Idol.
- For the last part of the quest, the game keeps track of the number of chests by counting the number of vault chests with the "opened" flag that exist in the level.
- If the Clone Gun is used to make three more vault chests, then Sparrow will anger when 5/11 chests are opened.
- If the opened vault chests are crushed, then it becomes possible to open all of the vault chests without angering Sparrow.
- Sparrow will give the Player Bag only if four opened vault chests exist in the level. Crushing all of the vault chests without returning to Sparrow makes it impossible to complete the quest.
Beg[]
Kali Altar destroyed[]
Beg's questline is started by destroying a Kali Altar. This will make the Spelunker lose 16 favor with Kali. After this, the Spelunker must continue to later levels.
First meeting[]
If a Kali Altar was destroyed in a previous level, entering another level that contains a Kali Altar will make Beg appear on the altar, cursed. When approached, he will say "You seem to enjoy Chaos!" Shortly after he says this, he will teleport out of the level, leaving a Bomb Bag behind.
The True Crown[]
If the Spelunker met Beg at an altar previously, they will want to become cursed to continue the quest. If the cursed Spelunker then enters a level that contains a Kali Altar, Beg will appear on the altar, still cursed from before. When approached, he will say "Ah, so you truly love Chaos! Just like me!" and give the Spelunker The True Crown. Reaching this point of the quest will add a bright white star to the constellation.
Notes[]
- If Beg appears and is damaged or killed before the Spelunker can talk to him, the quest ends instantly and The True Crown becomes unobtainable for the rest of the run.
- If Beg appears, but the Spelunker leaves the level without talking to him, the quest ends instantly. This can happen if the player does not check the full level for an altar.
- If the Spelunker talks to Beg in the first meeting, but Beg is attacked before he leaves a Bomb Bag, he will teleport out of the level without leaving anything behind. As long as the dialog was triggered, the quest can continue.
- Beg will never appear at the Kali Altar in the Palace of Pleasure's basement. Beg can appear at The City of Gold's altar, however.
- Because a Kali Altar is guaranteed to appear in The City of Gold, the Spelunker can meet Beg, then curse themself in Temple of Anubis 4-2 to minimize the time spent at one health.
- Note that the Curse Pot spawning is not guaranteed. It is possible to not have a method to curse oneself in 4-2, so getting cursed in 4-1 instead and making Beg potentially appear in 4-2 may be a better idea.
- If the player wants to kill Beg after getting The True Crown to sacrifice him to cure curse, the player should be careful because of the Telepack he drops. When Beg dies, the Telepack will go flying in a random direction with a random amount of speed. The Telepack will usually be going fast enough to deal damage to the cursed Spelunker, instantly killing them.
- Strangely, angering and/or killing Beg does not update his quest state to "angry/dead". This means that he can be killed after receiving The True Crown without losing the constellation star.
General notes[]
Multiple quest completions[]
It is possible to complete multiple quests in one run, and every completed quest adds a bright white star to the constellation. Notably, Madame Tusk and Sparrow's quests are possible to complete at the same time.
- Players should be careful to not let the Bodyguard see The Tusk Idol when stealing it.
- If any tiles within the Palace of Pleasure are destroyed, Madame Tusk will anger. This means that accessing the Palace's vault requires a form of teleportation to not anger Madame Tusk while splitting the treasure with Sparrow.
Lake of Fire warnings[]
The NPC who gives the Lake of Fire warning is determined by quest progress, except for Yang.
- If no quests were completed or Yang's quest was completed, then Yang will give the warning.
- If everyone offering quests was angered/killed, then nobody will give the warning.
- If Parsley was saved or the Spelunker helped Van Horsing kill Vlad, then Parsley or Van Horsing will give the warning.
