Old Bitey is a giant Piranha that appears as the mini-boss on the Flooded Cavern levels in The Jungle.

He is always found in the deep lake at the bottom of the level surrounded by a large shoal of ordinary Piranhas, and is very hard to defeat due to his high total of hit points and the fact that you need to fight him underwater, where your mobility is reduced.

Old Bitey drops a Golden Idol on death and is able to drop Crates as well; killing him will also allow you to collect the loot found on the lake bed in safety, including a number of Crates and a Coffin that contains the Viking Spelunker if not unlocked.

If encountered in combination with the Restless Dead Level Feeling, he will drop a Crystal Skull instead, which will also instantly summon The Ghost.

As with many bosses, killing Old Bitey unlocks a Deathmatch Arena.

Due to the high mobility and health of this monster, it is often best to try to lure him to the surface and throw Sticky Bombs at him from above, where he cannot retaliate, although finding an effective angle can be difficult. It takes four bombs in total to kill him.

You may wish to clear out a few of the smaller Piranhas before attacking Old Bitey, as they can often block your attacks. A Shotgun can be effective at thinning dense schools of Piranhas and damaging Old Bitey, but is also risky as you need to dive into the water to be able to target them in this way. Always try to give yourself a lot of room to prevent being mobbed from all directions, as this will usually result in you losing health very rapidly. As with many other mini-bosses, a Freeze Ray is also very effective against Old Bitey.

If you were fortunate enough to obtain a Shield from the Haunted Castle, it will work just as well on Old Bitey as it will on anything else, as he does not attempt to swim above or beneath you once you are shoving him with the shield. Be aware that doing this may destroy some of your loot in the process of crushing Old Bitey, and as ever, watch out for the smaller Piranhas coming up behind you.

  • During the Daily Challenge Mode, the contents of the Crates dropped by Old Bitey will be different for all players, leaving the possibility for one player to get a Jetpack while the other gets a Parachute.

That'll be more than a pedicure.

Megamouth (aka. Old Bitey, Jaws) is a boss-level enemy that only appears in the Flooded Cavern levels of the Jungle.

Although he is referred to as 'Megamouth' (and sometimes Jaws) in the game files and on the stats.txt file in the Spelunky directory folder, he is known as 'Old Bitey' in the HD version. However, his obvious resemblance to the shoal of ordinary Piranha he swims with leads most to think of him as 'Giant Piranha'.

Megamouth shows damage as he loses health

This giant fish is the one enemy in the Jungle that you don't want to fight without being prepared. In fact, you might not even know it exists, due to a combination of the moderate chance of the flooded cavern level appearing, and that you will usually never have to go into the water to complete the level.

Simply reaching Megamouth is an ordeal in itself - the water it resides in is filled with swarms of the smaller Piranha, which might kill you long before Megamouth decides to chase you. The boss does drop four supply crates, which tend to carry ropes and bombs, but you may always get lucky and find something very useful.

The Piranha is virtually impossible to whip without taking heavy amounts of damage. The best way to kill it is to use a Gun - of which the Shotgun is preferred due to the higher damage output, ease of aiming and ability to hit lots of the smaller Piranha at once.
Remember that Megamouth needs to be hit by at least ten bullets (each buckshot fires 6 pellets) before dying and tends to be bodyblocked by the large number of Piranha around him.
Slapping a Sticky Bomb onto him is guaranteed to get the job done if you want to risk getting close enough to do it.

Whip Fishing (For Lunatics)

There is a method for relatively safely defeating a Giant Piranha with just your whip, using no other items. It can be safe and reliable for expert players.
First, clear out a screen's worth of piranhas, as you'll need an empty area to work. This is the riskiest part, so be careful not to take damage from the piranhas.
Second, lure Megamouth to you and get above or beneath him (best done by hopping out of the water for a moment which causes him to freeze). Position your self above or below the exact center of his width (about where his red pectoral fin ends) and he will spin in place helplessly.
From there, swim up or down INTO his body (only his head will hurt you) and whip furiously. This method is extremely reliable when perfected, but may take a few failures at first to learn.

  • Curious fact: he doesn't appear as a skeleton like the normal piranhas in an restless dead flooded cavern level.
