Mantraps are dangerous carnivorous plants found in the Jungle. They are one of the few enemies in the game that can kill a Spelunker instantly, regardless of how much health they have.
They will eat any human or monster their own size that touches them (except other Mantraps), including corpses thrown at them or Spelunkers attempting to stomp on them from above.
Behavior
Mantraps move slowly and do not jump or fall off ledges. Having no eyes, they do not directly pursue their prey, so will only kill things that wander into their mouths.
When a Mantrap eats something, the Mantrap will be stunned for a short time as it rests. It does not take damage from being stunned in this way.
Shopkeepers eaten by Mantraps will not be killed, but will simply tear their way out from inside the Mantrap after a short amount of time, killing the plant in the process. This does not cause the Shopkeeper to become angry, but he will remain angry if the Spelunker is already wanted. It is possible to kill the Mantrap while the Shopkeeper is inside; this will NOT cause Shopkeepers to turn aggro. A Mantrap may also eat a Damsel or Hired Hand when it wanders into a shop. Though this will not cause the Shopkeepers to aggro, this does kill the character it eats.
If a Mantrap eats a Fire Frog, it will explode after a few seconds. This can destroy blocks and damage characters.
Strategy
Mantraps are best avoided rather than attacked, due to the high risk of getting close to them and the long time it takes to kill them without a weapon.
If it is necessary to kill a Mantrap - if it is blocking your path or threatening a Damsel, for example - it is best to do so from a distance with a ranged weapon or a throwable object, like a rock. Thrown corpses will be swallowed and deal no damage, but this will still cause the Mantrap to be stunned long enough to slip past it.
Although they can be sacrificed at an Altar while stunned for a decent amount of favor, this should only be attempted if the Altar is very close (within a few tiles) as the Mantrap's stun period is relatively short. If it wakes up while being carried, it will immediately eat the player carrying it.
Mantraps can be used as a situational weapon against tough enemies such as Cavemen or Green Knights by stunning them and throwing them towards the target. When they awaken, there is a good chance that they will devour the other enemy and allow you to pass safely.
Trivia
Obviously, the name of the Mantrap is derived from the Venus Flytrap, a well-known carnivorous plant famous for feeding on insects such as flies.
Bugs
- If the player has the Ankh and a Cape or a Jetpack, being eaten by a mantrap will unequip the Cape or Jetpack after respawning, leaving the item on the ground next to the mantrap.
- It's possible for a Mantrap to eat an enemy and a Spelunker when still doing the eating animation. In fact, Mantraps can eat any number of characters simultaneously.

Mantraps are a kind of enemy found in the Jungle.
These carnivorous plants are one of the few non-boss enemies with an instant kill attack, and are therefore rather dangerous.
Strategy
Mantraps will eat the Spelunker for an instant kill, even when jumped on from above. However with spike shoes, the Spelunker can kill Mantraps in a single hit by jumping on them.
Whipping a Mantrap will damage and stun it for a few seconds, though care must be taken to avoid getting too close to the plant when whipping.
They will eat Cavemen, Shopkeepers, or Damsels who contact them, after which the Mantrap will yawn and be stunned for a brief time. During this yawn, the Mantrap may still eat other characters that touch it.
Because Mantraps move very slowly and cannot jump or fall off ledges, they can usually quite easily be defeated from afar, by throwing objects at it, attacking it with a ranged weapon or blowing it up with a bomb.
Like other stunnable enemies, the Mantrap may be picked up, thrown and sacrificed at an altar. But beware - if the Mantrap wakes up while you are carrying it, it will eat you without hesitation.
Mantraps vs. Shopkeepers
Although being eaten whole by a Mantrap is enough to kill a normal human being, it takes more than that to finish off a subterranean Merchant.
Any Shopkeeper that is consumed by a Mantrap, even a dead shopkeeper, will blast his way out of its gut in a shower of leaves and sap, and then proceed to rampage around the level.
Killing the plant while it's stunned will only hasten this process, so be wary of attempting to kill a stunned Mantrap using the Shopkeeper's dropped shotgun.
However, note that the furious shopkeeper will (surprisingly) not be angry at you - he will be angry at life, and as such, you will gain no 'wanted level' for shopkeepers enraged in this fashion (Unless of course you kill the maniacal Shopkeeper or loot his unattended store). This gives an effective way of robbing the Black Market without attracting the shopkeepers' wrath, as, when the shopkeeper escapes from the Mantrap and flees his shop, all of the shop items that aren't in the frozen region will become yours for the taking.
Even so, he will still attempt to perforate you should you get too close, so it's best to simply avoid him while you make your way to the exit.

Mantraps are dangerous carnivorous plants found in the Jungle. They can kill a Spelunker instantly, regardless of health.
Behavior
Mantraps will move back and forth, occasionally stopping and turning around once meeting a ledge. Lacking eyes, they do not react to the player or similar entities approaching.
As soon as the player touches a Mantrap's hitbox, they are instantly killed after being pulled into its mouth.
Mantraps eat any creature that touches them, including corpses thrown at them as well as critters. After eating something, they become stunned for roughly a second while they digest their meal.
It is possible to survive touching a Mantrap while holding a body or riding a mount. The Mantrap will instead eat the body that the Spelunker is holding, or the mount that is being ridden, only dealing 1 damage to the Spelunker.
NPCs have the unique ability of breaking out of Mantraps, killing the creature in the process. If the player kills the Mantrap while a Shopkeeper is inside by using rope or any other form of attack, they may freely steal all of their shop's wares without angering them. This is not the case with Tun or any other NPC, who can break out of Mantraps but will anger if killed while inside.
Mantraps are immune to Thorny Vines, but weak to Machetes and fire-based attacks, as they will deal an extra point of damage to the plant. This means that throwing a lit torch at, or striking a Mantrap with a Machete will instantly kill them, regardless of health.
To veterans of Spelunky Classic, it should also be noted that Mantraps will NOT be killed by stomping on them while wearing Spike Shoes. Like their HD counterparts, they will instead eat the player like normal.
