Lava, like water, is a fluid in Spelunky 2.

Properties

Lava is found in large quantities in Volcana, Neo Babylon, and the Duat, as well at at the bottom of Olmec's Lair and in 4-3 of Tide Pool.

Instantly kills entities that make contact with it, barring Lavamanders.
Explosive items such as Bomb Bags or Backpacks instantly detonate on contact.
When the bottom of Ropes come into contact with lava, they will slowly burn from the bottom up, and only the top tide of the rope will remain climbable when completely burned.
Spawns Magmars in Volcana and Duat.

Most items will not be destroyed if submerged in lava, including wooden items like Hou Yi's Bow. Items can be retrieved if they are isolated from the lava. One exception is the Punish Ball, which will instantly be destroyed if dropped into lava, freeing the player.

Like water, lava will slowly be expunged if over a main exit door, but will not if over any other type of doorway. If a single instance of lava is not united with at least a single other one for a short time, it will remove itself. Lava can also be destroyed with the Freeze Ray, which will leave behind a destructible ice cube and sometimes a rock.

It can be found in [[Volcana]], under the floor for the 3rd phase of [[Olmec]] in [[Olmec's Lair]], at the bottom of the third level in [[Tide Pool]], in [[Duat]], in [[Neo Babylon]], as well as in [[Cosmic Ocean]] levels based on Volcana. It flows downwards and seeks its own level, just like water. There are a few differences between lava and water, however. If the player touches lava, they will die, therefore, they cannot swim in it. However, the player can still whip lava like they can whip water. If the player is riding a mount and falls into lava, the mount will die and the player will automatically jump off the mount.
