Lava, like water, is a fluid. It is one of the most dangerous hazards that a player can encounter in Spelunky 2.

Properties

Lava is found in large quantities in Volcana, Neo Babylon, and the Duat, as well at at the bottom of Olmec's Lair and in 4-3 of Tide Pool.

Unlike it's original incantation in Spelunky HD, Lava will not be expelled if a crucial block near it is destroyed; instead, it will flow normally like in real life. Lava can be moved by using projectiles or the whip.

Lava will instantly kill any entity that makes contact with it, with the exception of Lavamanders, who make their home in pools of lava. When explosives such as bombs or flammable pack items like the Jetpack come into contact with lava, they will instantly detonate. When the bottom of ropes come into contact with lava, they will slowly burn from the bottom up, and only the top tile of the rope will remain climbable when completely burned.

Most items will not be destroyed if fallen into lava, including wooden items like Hou Yi's Bow. Items can be retrieved if they are somehow isolated from the lava. One exception is the Ball and Chain, which will instantly be destroyed if dropped into lava, freeing the player.

Lava in Volcana will periodically spawn Magmars, who leap out of the lava in either direction.

Like water, lava will slowly be expunged if over a main exit door, but will not if over any other type of doorway. If a single instance of lava is not united with at least a single other one, it will remove itself. Lava can also be destroyed with the Freeze Ray, which will leave behind a destructible ice cube and sometimes a rock.

Strategy

  • Lava can easily softlock the player if disturbed by explosions or Lavamanders in Volcana, so it is recommended to act quickly and plan accordingly for such situations.
  • The Big Drill almost always goes through lava, meaning that it may take a long time for the lava to completely drain down to the bottom of the level for the player to descend safely.

Lava behaves much like water in the Jungle, but is much deadlier. Lava kills the Spelunker and all enemies on contact. Lava periodically produces Magma Men. It also produces light, visible in Dark levels. Lava is the only thing in the game which can kill Olmec.

If the Spelunker has obtained Vlad's Amulet, he or she will be unaffected by the Lava and the Magma Man it produces. This allows the Spelunker to freely move through the Lava as if it were water. Additionally, if a bomb is thrown when the Spelunker is fully submerged in Lava (the Lava that is not part of the surface) the bomb will fully disappear and be consumed, with no explosion happening.

Objects dropped into the lava will sink slowly. If you accidentally drop an item into the lava, it may be possible to retrieve it provided you're fast enough and you dropped it close enough to the edge of the pit. However, destroying the wall supporting the lava and draining the pit may cause the item to simply float in midair, irretrievable (unless hit with a well-timed bomb to send it flying). Push Blocks dropped into lava can provide a temporary stepping stone.

Unlike the rest of items, the Scepter and the Jetpack will not be destroyed if sank into lava. Remember to put bombs on the side of the pool that'll make the job easier.

Strategy

  • If a lava pit is too wide to jump across easily, try knocking out the side of the pit with bombs to reduce the lava's level.
  • It's a bad idea to throw bombs directly into the lava as they will detonate instantly, resulting in wasted bombs at best, or 10 points of damage at worst.
  • Ropes that unfurl into lava will burn from the bottom up, which is annoying.

OUCH that burns!

Lava is capable of killing the Spelunker and all enemies on contact. If a lava pit is too wide to jump across easily, try knocking out the side of the pit with bombs to reduce the lava's level. Ropes that unfurl into lava will burn from the bottom up.

Mechanics

Objects dropped into the lava will sink slowly. If you accidentally drop an item into the lava, it may be possible to retrieve it provided you're fast enough and you dropped it close enough to the edge of the pit. However, destroying the wall supporting the lava, attempting to drain the lava, may result in the item sinking to simply float in mid air, irretrievable (unless hit with a well timed bomb to send it flying). Push Blocks dropped into lava can provide a temporary stepping stone.

Almost all enemies will die on contact with lava, and corpses will slowly burn and sink.

Lava periodically produces Magma Men. It also produces light, visible in Dark levels.
