Hundun comparison

Hundun, as it appears when battling the player. Ana Spelunky is next to it for scale.

Hundun will rise up on a platform of spikes in its lair, forcing the player upwards through the standard Sunken City world generation to the arena portion of the level. Making contact with either the main egg portion or the legs of Hundun will deal 1 damage to the player and falter them for about a full second.

As Hundun ascends, 2 heads will slowly burst out from its shell; after rising up about 3 chunks, the head of an ostrich will burst out with 25 HP. Once Hundun rises about another 2 chunks, the head of a snake will crack out of the shell with 30 HP. If the player gets too close to one head, it will lunge at the player in an attempt to hit them.

At the top of the level, Hundun will use its wings to move left and right through the arena. Its heads will begin to spit fireballs instead of lunging at the player, dealing 2 fire damage and stunning their target. Attacking one head will always prompt the other to shoot a fireball, and attacking a head during the wind-up for its fireball attack will cancel it.

Once both heads are destroyed, Hundun will collapse to the ground with its eye open, staring menacingly at the player. At this point, Hundun is considered defeated and will no longer deal contact damage to the player. The door to at the top of the level leading to the end cutscene of the hard ending will open as soon as Hundun is defeated.

If the player collected Hou Yi's Bow from the Moon Challenge and the Arrow of Light from the Sun Challenge, they will be able to shoot its eye, opening a portal which will suck them into the final area of the game, known as the Cosmic Ocean.

Entering-Cosmic-Ocean

Shooting the eye of a defeated Hundun with the Arrow of Light using Hou Yi's Bow, opening a portal to the Cosmic Ocean.

Tips and Tricks

  • Hundun is not to be underestimated in the slightest, as being hit once will likely end the player's run. Combining the massive pit of spikes at the bottom of the arena with Hundun's stunning fireballs means that being hit a single time by Hundun will most likely lead to the players death by being stunned and thrown into the pit of spikes below.
  • The Ghost does not spawn on Hundun's Hideaway, meaning the player can take as much time as they need to defeat them.
  • Spike Shoes can be considered the most important piece of equipment the player has to defeat Hundun with, as stomping on its heads is one of the simplest ways to deal damage to Hundun. This is easier to perform as it ascends, as the heads will only attempt to shoot a fireball at the player when they take damage. Of course, the player should be wary of rushing water set loose by Hundun's climb, as it will prevent the player from dealing stomp damage.
    • Paste Bombs can also be thrown down below onto the heads, helping to shorten the fight significantly. Before Hundun ascends, the player can place three paste bombs for each head, so that they explode when they rise up high enough to be hit by the bombs.
    • A slow, albeit easier way to defeat Hundun is by hitting each of its heads with a Poison-tipped Arrow obtained from one of the Arrow Traps in the area. This will take at maximum 11 minutes and 30 seconds for the ostrich head to die and 14 minutes for the snake head to die, when accounting for Arrow damage and the fact that poison will only damage its victim every 30 seconds.
  • A common strategy is to defeat Hundun before he completely ascends to the main arena of the level, as both of its heads will need time to crack out of the shell, allowing the player to kill the heads early one by one with either Bombs (Preferably with Paste) or Spike Shoes. While performing this strategy, it is important for the player to have a plan of escaping back upwards or risk being killed by Hundun or the rising floor.

Bugs

In version 1.15.0 and prior, there was a glitch allowing the player to shoot Hundun's closed eye with the Arrow of Light, granting access to the Cosmic Ocean without defeating Hundun. This was fixed soon after its discovery.
