Horned Lizards are common enemies found in the Dwelling in Spelunky 2 that attack the player by rolling towards them at high speeds.

Behavior

Horned lizards will start off pacing back and forth, turning once meeting a ledge. When a horned lizard sees the player, it will do a short jump, then curl up into a ball and begin rolling forward.

In this curled-up state, the horned lizard cannot take damage from a whip without a Powerpack equipped or from being jumped on without spike shoes.

If the horned lizard hits an entity while it is rolling, it often leads to the victim taking more damage than simply the initial hit, as it will launch them in varying directions while also stunning them.

It is important to be very careful around horned lizards, as getting hit once can easily lead to massive HP loss, and if another entity is caught into the roll such as another enemy or a mount that the player was riding, it can easily lead to instant death from the other victim's body repeatedly hitting the player along with the roll.

A unique property of the horned lizard is that when thrown by the player, it will not behave like other items, and will instead begin rolling like its attack. This can be useful as a ranged weapon in a pinch, or for setting off arrow traps.

Occasionally, lizards who do see the player but do not find an opportune moment to roll will instead run back and forth, occasionally jumping and spitting two drops of blood, which can be useful if the player has the Kapala.

Trivia

  • If a dung beetle is close to the front of the Horned Lizard, they will eat it.
  • Their squirting of blood is based on the real world horned lizards or horny toads, who will squirt blood from their eyes at predators.
