Crush Traps are an extremely dangerous trap found in the Temple of Anubis.

Mechanics

When the Spelunker is detected within five tiles on any orthogonal axis, the trap will almost immediately slide in that direction, and will not stop until it hits a wall. They have a short idle period of about 1 second after coming to a halt, and will begin moving again if the player is still within one of its five tile trigger zones.

Unlike the Crush Traps in Spelunky HD, these Crush Traps will hesitate before sliding towards the player once it spots them, although only for approximately .683 seconds.

If the player is crushed against a wall, floor or ceiling by the Crush Trap, not only will they die instantly regardless of health, but every item that the player was holding or wearing will be destroyed. Flammable pack items like the Jetpack will also explode in the event of this.

Although crush traps are predictable, their speed and range of movement makes them one of the greatest hazards the player can encounter in the Temple of Anubis, as they often require quick reflexes and elaborate maneuvers to evade. Furthermore, they often generate amongst other traps and enemies that can cause enough of a distraction to catch a player unprepared for its merciless advance.

  • The trap can detect the player even through solid blocks, and will often crush treasure and other enemies as it moves.
  • Unlike all other traps, crush traps are not restricted to any one location and can theoretically reach any open space on the level.
    • For this reason, it is always a high priority to clear the area of any nearby Crush Traps, as ignoring them means they will often end up in unexpected positions, complicating an otherwise simple passage through the level.
  • Crush traps don't cause any contact damage, so even a trap that has caught a player and is shunting them towards a wall can be escaped by vaulting over it, as long as they move quickly enough.
  • If a Crush Trap crushes any type of explosive hazard, such as Bombs or a flammable pack item, it will instantly detonate them, destroying both the Crush Trap and anything around it.
  • Crush Traps are impeded by Quicksand, and are unable to pass through it, which can be taken advantage of by the player by remaining safe inside the Quicksand.

Giant Crush Traps

Giant Crush Traps function exactly the same as regular crush traps, only with a much bigger presence.

While regular Crush Traps are only a single tile big, Giant Crush Traps occupy an area of 4 tiles, 2 tiles wide and 2 tiles tall. This makes them difficult to escape without finding cover of some kind, like an alcove just below their line of sight, or a single block in their way.

Though these traps technically have the same range as standard Crush Traps, their large size effectively makes their range approximately 4.5 tiles.

Giant Crush Traps will always spawn as part of the Golden Idol trap in the Temple of Anubis. The player can use adjacent push blocks to prevent it from crushing either the player or the idol if they pass under it.

As standard Crush Traps do not appear in The City of Gold, Giant Crush Traps will appear instead, made of solid gold. If destroyed, they will drop chunks of gold like every other block in the level.

Disarming

Both kinds of Crush Trap can be destroyed with explosives or any other method of block destruction such as a Mattock. If one of the blocks that make up a Giant Crush Trap are destroyed, the entire trap will be destroyed with it.

To bomb Giant Crush Traps safely, it is best to do so from a diagonal angle or by planting a bomb on the other side of a one-tile-thick wall or a small gap that the Giant Crush Trap cannot pass through, as the radius of a bomb explosion is just about large enough to destroy two blocks if placed at the edge of the nearest tile. It is somewhat trickier to do this for standard Crush Traps, as they obviously can fit in one-tile-wide gaps.

Sticky bombs and the Pitcher's Mitt are recommended for this endeavor, as it makes the task of delivering a bomb to the target much simpler from a distance.

When dealing with problematic crush traps of either size, it is important to stay in control and make very careful and considered movements, akin to a deadly game of chess. Always try to predict where they're going to stop when they move, and then predict from there what their next move is going to be.

The player should take caution when descending into gaps where they cannot see the ground, as a Giant Crush Trap may be waiting offscreen to flatten them against a nearby ceiling.

Crush Traps are highly dangerous mobile traps that slide towards the Spelunker when they are detected. They move at high speeds until they hit something solid, crushing anything caught between.

Characters will be killed instantly and items will be destroyed.

Mechanics

When the Spelunker is detected within 6 tiles on any orthogonal axis, the trap will slide in that direction and will not stop until it hits a wall. They have very short idle periods after coming to a halt, and will begin moving again almost immediately if the player is still within its radius.

While Spelunky 2 Crush Traps wait a short moment before sliding towards the player, Crush Traps in Spelunky HD do not, instead immediately sliding in the direction of the victim as soon as they enter its rage.

The trap can detect the player even through solid blocks, and will often crush treasure and enemies as it moves.

Other than their sliding abilities, Crush Traps act identically to normal tiles, not dealing contact damage and able to be clung to with Climbing Gloves or as a ledge.

Crush Traps are not restricted to any one location and can theoretically reach any open space on the level. For this reason, it is always a high priority to clear the area of any nearby Crush Traps, as ignoring them means they will often end up in unexpected positions, complicating an otherwise simple passage through the level.

Strategy

Although Crush Traps are easily predicted, their speed and range of movement makes them one of the greatest hazards that can be encountered in The Temple, as they often require quick reflexes and elaborate maneuvers to evade. Furthermore, they often generate amongst other traps and enemies that can cause enough of a distraction to catch a player unprepared for its merciless advance.

Crush Traps don't actually cause contact damage, so even a trap that has caught a player and is shunting them towards a wall can be escaped by vaulting over it, so long as they move quickly enough.

Crush Traps can be destroyed with explosives, like any other block.

To bomb them safely, it is best to do so from a diagonal angle or by planting a bomb on the other side of a one-tile-thick wall, as the radius of a bomb explosion is just about large enough to destroy two blocks if placed at the edge of the nearest tile.

Sticky bombs and the Pitcher's Mitt are recommended for this endeavor, as it makes the task of delivering a bomb to the target much simpler from a distance.

Bugs

  • Sometimes Crush Traps will stun the Spelunker if they try to jump on top of them or make use of a Jetpack. This may also happen when too close to a Crush Trap, dealing a point of damage and leaving the Spelunker vulnerable.

Smash Traps are an incredibly hazardous trap that appears in the Temple.

Properties

Smash Traps will immediately slide into the direction of the Spelunker once they enter its range.

While Spelunky HD Crush Traps and Spelunky 2 Crush Traps do not deal damage and instead have a focus on flattening their target, Spelunky Classic Smash Traps deal a massive 10 damage on contact, which is repeated with continued exposure.

Strangely, it is possible to briefly stand on top of one with no damage taken as long while it is not in motion.

Smash Traps will, befitting of their name, break through falling platforms. As these two objects appear in different areas, this is a feature exclusive to custom levels and the Sun Room.

Smash Traps will also kill any enemy caught in their path, but will stop and not deal damage to Tomb Lords.
