Blocks are the most basic element in Spelunky. They are generated in random patterns every time you enter the level giving the game its distinct nature. Push blocks are the only blocks that can be moved, and only under certain circumstances. Every kind of block can be destroyed by either the bomb or the mattock. There may be gold or other treasure and even items hidden inside of blocks, more clearly visible with the spectacles. The entrance to the Black Market is hidden behind blocks in the Jungle and is only visible with the Udjat Eye.
Blocks in Spelunky Classic and Spelunky HD[]
There are 6 types of blocks in both Spelunky Classic and Spelunky HD:
Brown Blocks[]
Brown blocks are the main building blocks of The Mines. They are considered "normal" blocks, or blocks that cannot be moved and can only be destroyed by blowing them up or destroying them with a mattock.
Grass Blocks[]
The main building block of the Jungle. Grass blocks have characteristic "grass" growing on them, along with man-eating plants and vines, which will both disappear when the block they are attached to is destroyed. In every other respect, however, they function the same as brown blocks. Grass Blocks can be found rarely in the Temple.
Stone[]
Stone occasionally appears in the Jungle and is the main building block of the Temple. It has the same properties as brown and grass blocks. Stone blocks in the City of Gold look like golden blocks and drop gold after explosion.
Blue Blocks[]
Blue blocks are one of the two main blocks that make up the Ice Caves. They look exactly like brown blocks except with a blue color. It has the same properties as other normal blocks.
Ice Blocks[]
The other main building block of the Ice Caves. This is a "special" type of block. When walking or running, it will have normal traction, but if you stop pressing the arrow key, you will continue moving in the direction you were previously. In other words, you will 'slide'. They have a glassy appearance. Everything else, however, is normal.
Loose Platforms[]
These aren't technically blocks, but you can stand on them and grab onto the ledge, so I guess they count. Standing on these for longer than a few seconds will cause them to fall, often causing falling damage or instant death if you fall into the abyss. They look a bit like platforms in doodle jump, and are half the size of regular blue blocks. They are found in the Ice Caves. Also called partial blocks, they can be used to alleviate fall damage if you do not fall into the Abyss. If you drop hang on a loose platform and there is a full block below you (not the block), you may get squashed inside the block.
In Spelunky HD only[]
Loose platforms can be found rarely in Hell, too.
The Moai[]
The Moai isn't technically a block, but it's a structure behaving like a block. It can be entered by or using the Ankh. The Moai and three terrain blocks underneath it are immune to bombs and mines' explosions.
In Spelunky HD only
It can be entered by teleporting into the Moai. It can be also destroyed by the Ball and Chain.
Blocks in Spelunky HD only[]
Wooden Blocks[]
Wooden blocks can be found in the Mines and in the Jungle creating man-made structures: corridors, rooms, Cavemen and Tiki Men's primitive houses. They behave the same as the other blocks.
Tree Blocks[]
Tree blocks are part of Trees generated commonly in the Jungle and rarely in the Temple. They have one tile of width. If a tree block or a block under a tree is destroyed by a bomb, all parts of the tree over the destroyed block will disintegrate.
Beehive Blocks[]
They appear in the Jungle if a Bee Hive level feeling is active. They have the same properties as other terrain blocks.
Metal Blocks[]
They appear in UFO crash site levels, the 3-4 level in the Ice Caves and In the Mothership. They have the smae properties as other terrain blocks.
Indestructible Blocks[]
Three blocks under the Alien Queen in the Mothership, where the Plasma Cannon is located, cannot be destroyed by any means, even using the Ball and Chain.
Red Blocks[]
They can be found in Hell. They have the same properties as all other blocks.
Brick Blocks[]
They can be found in some structures in Hell: Vlad's Tower, covered lava lakes, houses and vertical columns. They behave the same as all other blocks.
Push Blocks[]
Push blocks are blocks that can be pushed. They appear as grey stone blocks, only your Spelunker is able move them when they walk into them. To move them more quickly, shift and arrow can be used to run against them.
Strategies[]
Push blocks can also be used to kill some enemies. They can be very helpful in robbing stores with the use of only one bomb. All that has to be done is to push a block along the shop, until the shopkeeper gets squished between the block and the wall. At the last second, the shopkeeper will become very upset and start firing his shotgun. Although this is not usually a problem because the block is in the way of the shots, if he manages to jump, then he could kill you quite easily in the open. However, all of the items in the shop will also be pushed so they will become stuck in the movable block and will need to be bombed out in order to collect them.
Moving blocks can also be manipulated by bombs and mattocks, but be careful. If you accidentally burrow under a moving block, the block will fall on you and crush you, which will kill you instantly. Also keep in mind that snakes will not always be crushed by the blocks, and are simply pushed up a block , which shouldn't cause problems because they are clearly visible, but it is still something to keep in mind.
In Spelunky HD only[]
Anchor blocks are part of Spike Balls - traps found commonly in Hell. They behave the same as normal push blocks.
In Hell, push blocks can be found at the entrance to Vlad's Tower. They have different texture, but they behave the same.
In co-op[]
In co-op runs, if Spelunkers are exactly in the same position and decide to move them, they move two, three, or four times faster (depending on the number of players).
Spelunky 2 Blocks[]
Inside of the newest game, it introduces us to a world of new things just like blocks!
Dwelling's Blocks[]
The main orange brown zigzag block works exactly like the brown block from The Mines back in Spelunky HD, so it doesn't need much explanation to it. Another one that doesn't require any introduction are the Spikes. One of the other blocks in the Dwellings is also the Skeleton blocks which drop skulls when broken. There's also the wooden block exactly like the Spelunky HD one. Lastly there's the Push Block which is in almost every place of Spelunky 2.
Jungle's Blocks[]
The Jungle has it's well known grass block exactly like the Spelunky HD block, which can also have vines connected to them. (The Black Market is also hidden in one of the levels, it has the grass and wood blocks in it). You can also find Spikes just like the Dwellings and any other Spelunky game. The Jungle also has bush blocks. You can destroy these blocks with a mattock or bombs but you can also burn it with a torch. The Jungle also brought new traps along with it, such as the Spear Trap, and the Thorny Vine. Oh and be careful for Bear Traps, they're usually hidden by some grass, so be careful. The Push Block is also in here too.
Volcana's Blocks[]
Volcana is one of the new places introduced in Spelunky 2. It's a faded purple with a light purple top. Volcana's blocks function as any other blocks do so nothing to it. But you can also find Powder Boxes within the level's walls. Another thing is that you can find Conveyor Belt too which is one of the new blocks added in the game. You can also find Spikeballs similar to the one from Spelunky HD, but they only come falling down if you go right under them, the spelunker has to see it on screen for it to come falling down. There's falling platforms, they fall after you step on them it usually takes up to around 1-2 seconds to fall. But you can also find the blocks from Neo Babylon near the Drill which appears in one of the levels of Volcana. And if you use the Drill you can get to the bottom where you can find Vlad's Castle which has red bricks.
Olmec's Lair's Blocks[]
Olmec's Lair doesn't really have anything much to it. It's entirely made up of stone blocks, it also has usually only one grass block which is where the Waddler is. And at the very bottom where the lava lake is.
Tide Pool's Blocks[]
The Tide Pool introduces players to a new block which looks similar to the one from the Jungle but it's more of a teal color with starfish and other things in it, instead of wood there's a new block, the name is unknown but it seems to look like an old-fashion Japanese block. A new place of course means new traps, so the traps in the Tide Pool are the Lion Traps, Sliding Walls, and Giant clam. It also includes the infamous Bear Trap, lastly Spikes but they look more like big red quills.
Abzu's Blocks[]
It's Important to mention that the Tide Pool includes the Abzu which the Spelunker can reach in 4-3. It's made up of exactly the same blocks from the Tide Pool, but you can find half the level filled with water.
Temple of Anubis's Blocks[]
The Temple of Anubis has a light tan colored block with orange and blue stripes on it, some blocks can also just be one of the three colors listed. The blocks also feature some hieroglyphics carved on them, some showing the Idol, a leg, a mattock, a snake, a ghost, a person praying, and the rest seem to be random symbols. There's also Quicksand some is just sand which you cannot go through. The Crush Trap is also here but it seems easier to get away from rather than the Spelunky HD Crush Trap. You also find a Giant Crush Trap.
The City of Gold's Blocks[]
The City of Gold is exactly like the Temple of Anubis just made out of pure solid gold, you can destroy it with bombs or a mattock to get treasure. You can also find the Sliding Walls but it's gold. There is also the Giant Crush Trap, just like everything else is also made of gold. In the middle you can a Kali Altar which sacrificing yourself with the Ankh can get you into the Duat.
Duat's Blocks[]
The Duat is where you go after sacrificing yourself on the Kali Altar in The City of Gold while holding the Ankh. The Duat's blocks look similar to the Temple of Anubis but grey and black and instead if hieroglyphics there's a snake in the middle, but some blocks have symbols on them instead. You can also find the skeleton blocks which is where Apep passes through. The Spelunker has to be careful because there is some lava as well. There's also chains you can climb to reach the top.
Ice Caves's Blocks[]
The Ice Caves is almost identical to the one from Spelunky HD just you can't get to the bottom like the Ice Cave's from Spelunky HD, you have to enter the Wet Fur Cave. The blocks look similar to the one's from Volcana but blue and have a dark blue diagonal stripes. The Falling Platforms are also here too just blue. There's also the ice block which walking on makes you slip, wearing Spike Shoes will allow you to walk on it perfectly. Be careful there's Thin Ice, if the Spelunker stands on it for too long it will break. (There's also the Boulder that comes out after taking the Idol.)
The Mothership's Blocks[]
The Mothership is found within the Ice Caves. It's light grey and purple and looks futuristic, some parts have a dark grey in the middle of it. Function's exactly like every other block. It also has some forcefields.
Neo Babylon's Blocks[]
Neo Babylon has some nice purple bricks and the top of the block looks like the top of the Mothership blocks. The bottom of the block also looks futuristic too. And even more traps too, such as the Forcefield, Laser Trap, Spark Trap, and the Elevator. All the traps also look purple and futuristic too. Another block there looks like the Tide Pool block but without the starfishes or anything in them, some parts of it show purple bricks behind it, some wires and roots coming out of it. They also have climbable mushrooms.
Tiamat's Thrones Blocks[]
Tiamat's Throne has blocks from the Mothership, Tide Pool, and Neo Babylon. Water is also at the bottom with Tentacles that grab you when you go the bottom. The only traps there are the Spark Traps and Forcefields.
Sunken City's Blocks[]
The Sunken City has blocks similar to the Tide Pool but greener and they have body parts (Eyes, Mouths, Teeth, Ears, & Noses). There's also a greenish stone block. In the blocks you can see some stone behind all the green, you can also see barnacles and roots in the blocks, another thing is that there is water that goes upward instead of down. There's even more traps to kill the Spelunker like the Frog trap, Arrow Trap, Sticky Trap, Bone Drop, Regenerating Block, & Egg Sac. There's also purple tubes you can go in through to get to another side. There's also wooden blocks for the Shops and Sun Challenge (Sun Challenge has Forcefield blocks). Spikes are also in this place.
Eggplant World's Blocks[]
The Eggplant World just had purple blocks with a vibrant green grass top and the old-fashion Japanese block from the Tide Pool. It has vines that look like roots. Lastly there's purple water.
Hundun's Hideaway[]
Hundun's Hideaway looks exactly like the Sunken City, just with Spikes at the very bottom of the level.
Cosmic Ocean's Blocks[]
The Cosmic Ocean has everything from every single place, just in different levels. By everything I mean blocks, Traps, and Monsters.
Miscellaneous[]
Camp[]
The Camp has the blocks from the Dwellings, not too much.
The Moon[]
The Moon's surface once you exit camp looks like the Dwelling's block but grey.
Chain Block[]
The Chain Blocks look grey with dots for screws on all four corners with a chain connected to the bottom.
