Bats behave much like [[spiders]] in that they are generated clinging to the ceiling. They will only come down if you move into an arc-shaped space underneath them (this space continues through walls). Bats will always attempt to take the shortest possible route to hit you, but if you retreat too far outside their activation area or go underwater they will stop pursuing and reattach themselves to the ceiling.

==Behavior==
The main difficulty with bats is simply that they tend to approach from above. Ideally you can dispatch them by throwing an item upward at them, but if you are left to resort to your whip, you need to be careful. If the bat's path causes it to come down on top of you, you won't be able to stomp it, nor whip it. The surest way to stay safe is to enter a tunnel with a single tile height, forcing the bat to fly straight towards you. Otherwise you need to manage the bat's angle of approach: sometimes if you run away from the bat, it will proceed towards you at a 45 degree angle, you will run out of room to maneuver, and the bat won't be low enough for it to hit you when it reaches you. Instead, learn to sometimes position yourself underneath for a bit the bat to draw it down, and then move to the side so that it flies at you from the side, ready to be whipped. If you are trapped below a bat, and cannot more away, then a rope thrown upwards through the bat will kill it in a shower of [[blood]], but at the expense of using a rope.

Finally, more so than most enemies, it can be beneficial to be able to jump and whip a bat in the air. By hitting the whip key before you jump you can give yourself a larger margin of error on this attack.

Bats are a common enemy found in the first two Areas. They are one of the few aerial enemies in the game.

Behavior

Bats spawn much like Spiders, clinging to the ceiling.
They will begin to fly at you if you move into the parabolic area below them, even if there is no line of sight.
Bats will always attempt to fly directly at you, with very little path-finding intelligence. If you move too far away from them or dive underwater they will stop pursuing and re-attach themselves to the ceiling.

Strategy

The main difficulty when dealing with bats is that they tend to approach from above, where it can be difficult to hit them.
The best course of action is to run backwards or get to high ground, then wait for the bat to come to you. This will help to level the dangerous height difference and reduce the reliance on your reflexes.

Ideally, you should aim to draw the bat into a 45 degree angle between you and the ground, so that you can dispatch them by throwing an item upward at them, or at least bring them into the range of your jump-whipping.

Beware trapping yourself in a place where the bat will fly down directly on top of you: you won't be able to attack it unless you throw a rope, which is a waste of precious equipment.

It is important to be comfortable with jump-whipping to deal with bats easily.
