The Ankh is an equipped item that must be acquired from the Black market (a whopping $50,000 if purchased, though it can be stolen at great risk) if you want to have any hope of reaching the City of Gold.

Functionality

The Ankh does one thing and one thing only - it breaks when you die, and revives you with four hearts. Although this feature is probably one of the most useful in the game, in order to reach the City of Gold you MUST consume the Ankh in one of the levels of Area 3. You will know which area this is when you see a giant Moai with an ankh on top of it. You may kill yourself anywhere on the level with the skull on it for this to work, and CANNOT use a bomb, due to the aftershock effect which will kill you twice. The best method of doing this is simply pressing Escape and hitting F1. Successfully using the Ankh on the Moai level will cause you to respawn inside the giant skull, where the Hedjet is lying on the floor in front of an exit door that will allow you to instantly skip the level you are on.

Should you keep the Ankh for later levels, the magma of Area 4 can kill you instantly without allowing the Ankh to revive you, as with bombs.

Note: When reviving with the Ankh, the game will keep your current bomb/rope count, and any equipped items. Held items (such as the shotgun or the pistol) are usually left behind if you bomb yourself, but are always teleported with you if you use ESC+F1.

Trivia

The Ankh is an Egyptian symbol representing eternal life - appropriate for an artifact that can raise the dead.
