Abzu is a hidden area in Tide Pool where one can face Kingu and earn the Tablet of Destiny. It is a parallel to the Duat in Temple of Anubis.

Abzu is tall arena with five layers:

  • The top of the arena, with a few platforms and multiple entrances to the sub rooms. Used to get on the back of Kingu.
  • The middle of the area, where Kingu lies.
  • The sub rooms, used to ascend to the top of the arena.
  • The spawn area, full of typical Tide Pool enemies and an entrance into the sub rooms near the water.
  • The water, which has no bottom, save for a section with a coffin containing Tina Flan.

How to access

Abzu is hidden deep within the lava near the bottom of level 4-3 of Tide Pool. In order to drain the lava, you must take a sub room tunnel somewhere in the level to the bottom, where picking up a golden idol will trigger a trap to drain all of the lava.

However, the player is not able to leave this bottom area back from the entrance they came (as warned by a friendly NPC outside of the door), meaning they will have to find a new way out of the perilous lava trap. The easiest way to do this is to let yourself be killed with the Ankh, then be teleported back up via resurrection.

In order to ensure that Excalibur or any flammable pack items such as the Jetpack can be safely taken to Abzu and not lost within the lava after the triggering of the trap, the player should leave them in the upper portion of the level before leaving to trigger the lava trap, so that they may pick it up after triggering the trap and returning to the upper portion.

There are other, much trickier methods to avoid consuming the Ankh to reach Abzu however, known as "Ankh Skips". These are elaborated upon in the Skips wiki page.

After setting off the Powder Boxes and draining the lava, the door to Abzu is now safe to enter.

Strategy

  • In order to easily defeat Kingu in Abzu, Excalibur is almost necessary, as it trivializes the fight by letting the player repeatedly strike her shell with it until she drops the Tablet of Destiny.
    • To safely bring Excalibur to Abzu, it is recommended to leave it in the upper portion of Tide Pool 4-3 when one goes down to trigger the Idol trap and drain the lava. That way, a player can return to the upper portion after either consuming the Ankh or evading the lava and retrieve the blade without fear of losing it.
      • It is recommended to do this with any flammable pack items as well, such as the Jetpack, as contact with lava will explode and destroy the pack.
    • Take caution when moving in the lower levels of the arena, as an enemy can hit you and send Excalibur plummeting into the deep water, where it is not retrievable.
